Alliance Leisure brings adventure and innovation to Prestatyn Leisure Centre

Working in collaboration with Denbighshire Leisure Ltd (DLL), Alliance Leisure has delivered the next generation of fitness experiences at Prestatyn Leisure Centre to transform PE for local children and boost community engagement.

The innovative digital fitness experiences include the first Prama immersive group exercise studio in North Wales as well as the country’s inaugural interactive squash court.

This investment is another example of DLL’s ongoing commitment to innovation, community engagement and providing cutting edge fitness and leisure facilities for all ages

The Prama studio offers a dynamic and engaging environment where sound, lights, floors and walls come to life. The studio will revolutionise the centre’s junior fitness programme and deliver an innovative PE curriculum for students of Prestatyn High School, which use the leisure centre during school hours.

The interactive squash experience enhances the traditional game to appeal to a new generation of players. Utilising laser projectors, motion sensors and responsive sensors to track the ball, players can choose from a diverse range of games designed to enhance key skills such as hand-eye coordination, speed, strength and reaction time.

The project, which was delivered through the UK Leisure Framework, which is owned and managed by Denbighshire Leisure Ltd, also includes a Clip and Climb climbing experience to expand DLL’s portfolio of family-friendly adventures.

Alongside the new digital fitness experiences, the centre also offers a DLL Refuel station featuring Costa Coffee, providing a relaxing area for members to unwind and socialise after their activities.

Building on the success of our Nova centre in Prestatyn and its popular attractions like Club Nova, Beach Hut and adventure play, we are excited to introduce these innovative experiences to Prestatyn Leisure Centre. The new digital additions will significantly enhance the PE programme for current and future students, while offering an unparalleled fitness experience for the wider community.

Burscough Sports Centre Breaks Ground On £3.18 Million Regeneration

Works are underway in West Lancashire to transform Burscough Sports Centre into a thriving leisure, fitness and wellbeing hub, thanks to a £3.18 investment by West Lancashire Borough Council.

Working in partnership with Alliance Leisure, improvements will deliver, a modern, efficient facility that meets the diverse health and wellbeing needs of Burscough residents today and for many generations to come.

We are delighted with the progress of the refurbishment and are looking forward to Burscough sports reopening in early 2025. The changes will not only provide a quality modern offer to the residents of the borough, but they will also help the council to make progress towards its net zero aspirations.

Renovations will include a completely reimagined layout incorporating a refurbished and extended gym with 70 workout stations and a newly integrated functional training space. This will be complemented by a new indoor cycling studio and a wellbeing space. The sports hall and squash court floors will be refurbished along with extensive improvements to changing rooms and toilets.

Behind the scenes, plant, mechanical, electrical and heating/cooling infrastructure will be upgraded to enhance efficiencies and reduce the facility’s environmental impact.

BGH Architects, based here in the North West, bring many years of experience and local knowledge whilst Hadron Consulting who will oversee project management, already have a close working relationship with the council. Together, we’re dedicated to ensuring this investment has a lasting, transformative impact on the population of Burscough and the surrounding areas

On Thursday, September 26, Alliance Leisure facilitated a Time Capsule Event, to mark the start of transformative refurbishment works at Burscough Sports Centre. It was truly inspiring to see local schoolchildren participate, imagining what it will be like for future generations to rediscover this capsule and reflect on the history and progress of their community.

Knowing the school is supporting them to take health and wellbeing seriously, shows that young people are being encouraged to make positive choices. Alliance Leisure Achieves Silver iiE Accreditation

Alliance Leisure has achieved Silver Accreditation with the national environmental accreditation scheme, iiE (Investors in the Environment).

We’re very proud to have retained our Silver Accreditation and this year we have made more progress on our commitment to be net zero by 2035. However, for us it’s not just about emissions, but also being a responsible business and how we impact the wider environment through our direct actions and those of our partners and supply chain. Our new strategy focuses on Legacy, Culture, and Influence and through this new way of working we’re improving our environmental performance.

Through the iiE journey Alliance Leisure have clearly identified our sustainability goals and aligned these to pledges as part of the Social Value Accreditation Mark. Understanding that our carbon emissions across travel, office and home-working environments and data storage allows us to share current levels with our team, and aids in the agreement of realistic targets whilst aiming towards net zero by 2035.

Further enabling works at West Wickham Leisure Centre to help deliver major refurbishment

The next stage of enabling works at West Wickham Leisure Centre have been approved to keep the £16m refurbishment works on track in a substantial boost to the borough’s leisure provision.

Initial enabling works were completed on site over the summer to prepare for the major refurbishment of the centre, which is set to be completed in Spring 2026.

Extensive surveys by specialist teams have swiftly identified additional works that are required as part of the refurbishment, including the removal of additional asbestos that was found in the building. This early identification helps to minimise delays by allowing required works to be coordinated within the existing programme, with additional costs remaining within the planned contingencies for the programme.

This is a necessary step towards the exciting refurbishment of this much-loved centre, which will be an incredible boost to health and wellbeing in the borough. These important initial stages have allowed required works to be identified early in this process, giving us time to adjust for this and prevent major disruption to the programme. This is part of our largest leisure investment in a generation and we are now pressing ahead so that residents can enjoy a greatly improved centre as soon as possible.

Improvements to the pool, a new café, and enhanced changing rooms with showers and lockers will be provided as part of the refurbishment works. The improved centre will also feature new exercise studios with power-assisted equipment to support with mobility and rehabilitation. New pool pods and Changing Places facilities will also be introduced to enhance accessibility.

The further enabling works were approved by the Executive Councillor following scrutiny by the Renewal, Recreation and Housing PDS Committee. Improvements to the West Wickham facilities and to the refurbishment of the Walnuts leisure centre are being delivered in partnership with Mytime Active.

The West Wickham centre plays an important role in promoting health and wellbeing in the local area. We at Alliance Leisure, are delighted to bring our leisure development expertise to continue the delivery of this exciting transformation of the centre, with major investment from the Council, making it fit for the future. The new facilities will encourage more people to be more active and help improve the health and wellbeing of our local community.

Alliance Leisure Transforms Under-Utilised Space into Dynamic Functional Training Space in Scotland

Working in close partnership with a number of specialist providers, Alliance Leisure were appointed by East Renfrewshire Council to transform a low occupancy martial arts studio into a high energy functional training arena.

The space, branded The Grid, will be used for individual and group training and will enhance the current fitness offering for the community.

The council worked with Alliance Leisure who, through the UK Leisure Framework which is managed by Denbighshire Leisure Ltd (DLL), assembled a best-in-class team of leisure specialists to execute the vision. The £300K transformation was completed in just 4 weeks and will be operated by East Renfrewshire Leisure and Culture Trust.

Working with Alliance Leisure and the specialist partners to deliver our exciting new fitness space The Grid for Barrhead Foundry has been a great experience. From initially designing the space through to the delivery of the building works and fitout, this has been a smooth process and Alliance really looked at the finer details assisting with the fitness concept. The new training space will have a huge impact and provide a perfect work out environment for our customers and community.

Progress in Kingston-upon-Thames

Alliance Leisure are delighted to be part of the project to develop a new-build leisure centre in Kingston-upon-Thames.

The leisure centre will deliver the range of activities in a modern and sustainable two-storey building. Accessibility and inclusivity remain key features of the design, with new pedestrian links and landscaped spaces throughout the scheme. Public consultation, as ever, was essential to the scheme, and we are pleased to be addressing a multitude of community requirements through the new scheme.

The design reflects comments received from communities across the Royal Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames, as well as advice from the Design Review Panel and local planning authority. The council is now hosting the last set of engagement events before it looks to submit a planning application for the scheme in Autumn 2024.

Award-winning architects Roberts Limbrick have recently shared new designs for the proposed centre to much approval, whilst construction experts, Pellikaan, have been announced as the construction partners for the project. The project is being delivered through the UK Leisure Framework, which is managed by Denbighshire Leisure.

The unveiling of the designs, and securing of a construction partner, both mark significant milestones in delivering a leisure centre that meets the highest standards of quality, sustainability and accessibility.

We are going through all of the necessary processes to bring the project forward as quickly as possible, and this will be one of the final chances for people to give feedback as we look to submit the required planning application in the coming months.

Swimming is back in Merthyr Tydfil

This month sees the opening of brand-new swim facilities at Merthry Tydfil Leisure Centre, thanks to a £6 million investment secured by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council.

The regeneration project, led by Alliance Leisure through the UK Leisure Framework, sees swim facilities reintroduced to the leisure centre after previous facilities fell into a state of disrepair, leaving local residents without pool provision for a period of for years.

Speaking of the opening, Councillor Geraint Thomas, Leader, Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council says: “It is absolutely fantastic to see swimming reintroduced at the leisure centre. Swimming is a life skill that should be accessible to everyone, especially children. It is great to see so many people enjoying the new facilities and to know that the decarbonisation works completed as part of the project have improved the energy efficiency and created a sustainable future for the building.”

Works have included the development of a new 25m, six-lane main pool, a dedicated teaching pool offering a full swimming education programme plus a new splash pool designed to inspire water confidence and deliver engaging sensory experiences for toddlers. The changing facilities have also been redesigned to improve the overall visitor experience. In addition, gas fuelled boilers have been replaced by more efficient air source heat pumps, a move that is expected to cut cardon emissions by 61 per cent.

This project has been a truly collaborative effort. Working with partners through the UK Leisure Framework, which is owned and managed by Denbighshire Leisure Limited (DLL), including Universal Construction, Myrtha Pools, Savernake Property Consultants and architects, BGH, we were able to bring leisure specialism to every aspect of the project, maximising efficiencies and expertise to deliver an outcome that will serve the community for many years to come.

The leisure centre remained open throughout the build so people could continue to benefit from the sports hall, the fitness suite and the exercise studios. Councillor Geraint Thomas concludes:

Working with Alliance Leisure we achieved an amazing outcome. Swimming is now firmly back on the timetable and the community has a full complement of sport and leisure facilities to support a happy, healthy active life at all stages of their life journey. The sustainability works carried out also support the council’s net zero ambitions, creating a leisure centre that is fit for purpose both now and long into the future.

End of an Era but the Dawn of a New Beginning at Clay Cross Active

Alliance Leisure, North East Derbyshire District Council, the Clay Cross Town Deal board, and Sport England were on site at Sharley Park to bid the old leisure centre a final farewell as demolition commenced on the building which is paving way for a fantastic state-of-the-art community hub called Clay Cross Active which opens in the winter.

Alliance Leisure has been appointed to deliver the works through the UK Leisure Framework, owned by Denbighshire Leisure Limited (DLL).

Work has been underway at the site for some months now, putting in the steel frame of the new building at the rear of the old leisure centre which managed to stay partially open right up until February 2024. This new phase and demolition of the old building will see the build start to accelerate as it gets closer to completion.

The new centre has been needed for some time, the old facility being tired and dated and the community had said in consultations they wanted a new centre; using Alliance Leisure’s 25-year expertise, we are ensuring that they are getting a new centre that far surpasses their expectations.

However, this didn’t stop users of the centre sharing their amazing comments, looking back at how the centre has formed a cornerstone of the community helping their parents learn to swim right down to their own children in recent times and reminiscing about getting chip butties after a swim!

The time has now come to embrace the new and innovative, as such, the facility will feature a large modern fitness suite, immersive spin studio, sports hall, main pool and learner pool with spectator seating, changing places facility, wellness suite, soft play, a TAGactive arena, and a community café. Local residents will therefore still retain a welcoming community hub, but with a plethora of new ways to get active and moving.

Cllr Kathy Rouse, Cabinet Member for Leisure at North East Derbyshire District Council said,

I have fond memories of Sharley Park myself and share the views of our residents – it’s been a fantastic facility that served our community well, but now is the time to embrace the new hub which is being built and its exciting to see it progress.

It’s going to be brilliant for the town, and you can really sense the Clay Cross Town Deal coming together as works progress on the wider town areas.

Whilst Andy James, Sport England added,

This project supports key elements of our ‘Strategy Uniting the Movement’, given the key location of the facility within a parks location it supports one of our key themes within the strategy in terms of encouraging ‘Active Environments’.

Sport England will continue this support going forward and are actively involved supporting the construction of the facility and acting as a critical friend to the council, this will continue until the centre opens and beyond.

£26 Million Investment Paves The Way For Health and Wellbeing Hub at Lincolnshire Sport Complex

South Holland District Council has bolstered its successful £20 million UK Government, Levelling Up Fund bid with a £6 million investment to see the Castle Sports Complex in Spalding transformed into a health and wellbeing hub to drive positive health outcomes for residents across the district.

Alliance Leisure has been appointed to deliver the works through the UK Leisure Framework, owned by Denbighshire Leisure Limited (DLL).

Works are expected to begin in the Autumn and will see the Castle Sports Complex completely remodelled and extended to include an integral swimming provision. A 6-lane 25 metre pool will be supported by a second, 20m teaching pool that will individuals, groups, clubs and local schools giving young people access to the facilities they need to develop essential swim skills. Outside, a splash pad will also be added to accommodate families and young children. These facilities will replace the current provision offered by Spalding Swimming Pool.

The new wellbeing hub will also host a sports hall, gym, family activity zone, a fully equipped fitness suite, indoor cycling and fitness studios, a dedicated wellness suite offering power assisted exercise and a health and wellbeing space for appointments with health practitioners, including services to support good mental health and those living with diabetes, Alzheimer’s and dementia. A café and lounge area will also provide a much-needed place for people to eat and drink as well as meet friends and socialise. The Centre’s current Bowls Hall will receive some much-needed maintenance as part of the redevelopment.

Transformational investment like this only happens once in a lifetime so it is absolutely imperative that we get it right. Working with our trusted, leisure specialist partners including Hadron Consulting, Saunders Boston Architects, Wilmott Dixon and Max Associates. The team have been involved from the start, supporting the council’s LUF bid and preparing the designs. We will now continue to work with the council to deliver the build. When the development completes in 2026, residents in South Holland will have access to an incredible wellbeing and activity hub, created in direct response to the needs of the community, driving a healthier, happier and more active community.

Outside, a 3G artificial turn floodlight football pitch will be supported by a separate multi-use games arena hosting an array of sports including basketball and football, with a dedicated track meandering through the site suitable for walkers, runners or cyclists . Car parking will be extended to accommodate the anticipated uplift in usage and extensive landscaping will take place throughout, enhancing the visual appeal.

Works are due to start in late 2024 and will complete in the summer of 2026.
