Construction Begins on £30 million Huntingdon Sport and Health Hub
Alliance Leisure celebrates works getting underway on the delivery of a £30 million Sport and Health Hub in Huntingdon.
The development will transform facilities at One Leisure Huntingdon, creating a modern sport, fitness and wellbeing destination designed to support more people to be active. Plans include a 3G football pitch, padel and pickleball courts, upgraded health and fitness spaces, expanded swimming provision and improved accessibility across the leisure facilities.
The project is being delivered by Alliance Leisure, through the UK Leisure Framework, owned and managed by Denbighshire Leisure (DLL) in partnership with Huntingdonshire District Council. Investment is set to create new opportunities for local residents, schools and sports clubs, while strengthening the role of public leisure in supporting community health and wellbeing.
The council has allocated £10.3 million from Community Infrastructure Levy funding to support the development. The wider redevelopment is also expected to deliver more than £1.6 million in wellbeing benefits by encouraging more young people to become active.
Steve Rose, Delivery Manager, Alliance Leisure, comments:
Crucially, the development is shaped around the needs of the local community. By investing in facilities that reflect how residents want and need to be active, the hub will create more opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to participate in sport, improve their health and wellbeing, and make the most of their local leisure provision.
Through the UK Leisure Framework we have brought together a specialist team of leisure development partners to work alongside Huntingdonshire District Council, combining the skills and experience needed to turn its vision into reality that will serve the community for many years to come.
Councillor Debbie Mickelburgh, executive councillor for communities, health and leisure, said:
The start of construction is an exciting step forward for the Huntingdon Sport and Health Hub project.
We look forward to seeing the hub take shape and the positive impact it will have in supporting active lifestyles and improving health outcomes for the residents in our district.
Councillor Patrick Kadewere, mayor of Huntingdon, adds:
Huntingdon Town Council is proud to have worked alongside Huntingdonshire District Council, St Peter’s School and the many sports clubs that call this site home to help shape plans for this important investment.
The new Sport and Health Hub will create opportunities for people of all ages to be active, improve their wellbeing, and enjoy sport for generations to come.
Alliance Leisure is responsible for project delivery, coordinating specialist supplier partners including; Varsity Consulting, Saunders Boston Architects and Universal Civils and Build through the UK Leisure Framework to bring the development to life. The framework provides a procurement route for public sector leisure projects, bringing together the expertise needed to deliver complex developments.
Huntingdonshire District Council will continue to work with partners and residents throughout construction, with works due to complete Autumn 2028.
