Work Begins on £10m Citadel Leisure Centre Project
Work Begins on £10m Citadel Leisure Centre Project
Work begins on the £10 million redevelopment of Citadel Leisure Centre at Ayr Harbour in November.
This initial phase will focus on the Citadel’s roof and facade, marking the start of a programme of works at the popular leisure centre, which is set to benefit from an extensive refurbishment.
The refurbishment is set to revolutionise the Citadel Leisure Centre, providing accessible, high-quality sport and leisure facilities for local residents whilst maintaining, and even increasing, the sense of community that has been built by the centre.
The project, which is being completed for South Ayrshire Council, is set to include a new reception area, a new café and kitchen, a new spa facility, refurbished wet and new dry changing rooms, a new family activity hub and party rooms, a two-storey gym, high impact studio, spin studio, and wellness suite, and a new changing places facility, amongst other improvements.
Final designs of the new-look centre were revealed in September following planning approval.
South Ayrshire Council’s Portfolio Holder for Tourism, Culture and Rural Affairs, Councillor Alec Clark, said:
It’s brilliant to know that we’re now very close to beginning work at the Citadel. These essential exterior works, once complete, will allow us to progress to the interior upgrade when service users will start to see a real improvement to the facility.
The project was procured through the UK Leisure Framework, managed by Denbighshire Leisure, and the team also includes lead contractor Robertson, Axiom as project managers, architects and principal designers Holmes Miller, WSP, and Struer.
South Ayrshire Council’s Portfolio Holder for Buildings, Housing and Environment, Councillor Martin Kilbride, said:
The exterior works on the Citadel will allow us to deliver significant improvements in energy efficiency and extend the lifespan of the centre, while paving the way for the planned interior enhancements. It’ll be great to see the project kick off next month.
Jonny Curley, Director for Scotland at Alliance Leisure, adds:
We are excited to begin work on the transformation of Citadel Leisure Centre. This project will not only address essential repairs but will also improve the overall visitor experience to create a key leisure and recreation destination for residents and visitors alike.
