Multi-activity family destination opens its doors on the Wirral

As part of its ambition to encourage an active community and create a commercially sustainable future for its leisure provision, Wirral Council has invested £2.7 million in the repositioning and development of the Wirral Tennis & Sports Centre as an activity hub for the whole family. The facility has been renamed Bidston Sports & Activity Centre.

Alliance Leisure were appointed as the council’s leisure development partner and delivered the project through the UK Leisure Framework, which is managed by Denbighshire Leisure, the new destination offers residents and visitors a multitude of experiences to encourage movement and social interactions, helping to promote community cohesion and encourage good health through physical activity.

The facility is divided into three zones; ‘adventure play’, ‘fitness’ and ‘tennis’. Each zone is served by a central remodelled reception area, and supported by a large communal food and beverage facility with a dual servery.

Working with Alliance Leisure – a proven leisure development specialist - has been extremely positive. At all stages of the development, we had confidence that the project was being managed and directed by those with decades of previous experience and that we were benefiting from efficiencies at all levels of the supply chain. The finished project looks and feels amazing and will enhance the lives of everyone within the community for many years to come.

For youngsters aged 8 and above, and also adults, there is TAGactive arena, a digitally gamified obstacle course, whilst a large soft play area will cater for younger children. This area has been designed to encourage families to spend active time together in a safe, stimulating and fun environment.

A new fitness suite, equipped with a comprehensive selection of cardiovascular and strength training equipment, supported by a dedicated, immersive group cycle studio provides state of the art training facilities for all ages and abilities, whilst tennis remains an integral part of the offer, thanks to the retained provision of six indoor courts.

Supporting Alliance Leisure in project delivery is Universal Group as principal contractor, Pozzoni Architects and Play Revolution, the designers and supplier of the TAGactive and adventure play structures. Works began in November 2022.

The facility is owned by Wirral Council and managed by Active Wirral, although the tennis provision is now managed directly by the Lawn Tennis Association due to a direct new partnership for the NGB with Wirral Council.

Harrogate Leisure Centre reopens following multi-million pound investment

The Harrogate Hydro reopened its doors this week having been transformed into the Harrogate Leisure and Wellbeing Centre, thanks to a £13.5 million major refurbishment by North Yorkshire Council. The facility is operated by Brimhams Active.

The project has been delivered by Alliance Leisure, working with ISG Construction, Axiom Project Services and GT3 architects through the UK Leisure Framework, managed by Denbighshire Leisure Limited (DLL).

New facilities include a new 400sqm fitness suite, a Les Mills immersive cycle studio, a sauna and steam suite, plus a reconfigured reception and café.

Works have also included extending the building’s footprint and substantial reimagining throughout to create a bright, modern offering more in keeping with the needs of today’s vibrant and diverse community.

Existing pool and leisure facilities have been completely overhauled. In the pool, a new diving structure has been installed so the centre can continue to support up and coming diving talent in the way that it has done for Olympians, such as Jack Laugher MBE and Oliver Dingley.

Outside, the building has been remodelled to complement the surrounding environment with landscaping, a reconfigured car park, bicycle storage and electric vehicle charging points.

The re-opening of the new and improved Harrogate Leisure and Wellness Centre will ensure that continues to be the case. It is also pleasing that energy-efficiency has been at the heart of the project, in line with our climate pledges, and this will serve as an example for other facilities across the county.

Investment in the old Hydro has transformed the facility and future proofed leisure provision for many years to come. In addition to the visible improvements, there is so much that has gone on behind the scenes to make this centre more energy efficient. Air source heat pumps have replaced existing gas boilers and 250 solar panels have been installed along with new energy monitoring and control systems. These measures are expected to half the carbon footprint of the leisure centre. This is great news for the council’s net zero targets, great news for residents and ultimately, great news for the planet.

Northcroft Lido reopens following £5 million redevelopment

Northcroft Lido reopens following £5.7million redevelopment

The major redevelopment of the lido at Northcroft Leisure Centre, Newbury has completed following a £5.7 million investment.

Commissioned by West Berkshire Council and developed by Alliance Leisure working in partnership with Myrtha Pools and Universal Civils & Build through the UK Leisure Framework, the new outdoor facilities include a 50 metre, Olympic size outdoor swimming pool supported by a splash pad and fun slide, beach hut style changing rooms, a sun terrace and a relaxation area, all of which are fully accessible.

It is anticipated that the new facilities, opened on the 21st August 2023, will accommodate 50,000 attendances each season. In addition to attracting more visitors to the facility through the inclusion of the splash pad, main pool, slides, residents will now also enjoy an extended season.

Moving forwards, Everyone Active has been appointed under a ten-year term to manage the Northcroft Leisure Centre and Newbury Lido as part of a wider leisure management agreement with West Berkshire Council.

Greg Walker explains that this is thanks to the redesign of the pool. He says, “By shortening the pool from 72 metres to 50 metres and reducing the depth from a maximum of 2.8 metres to a profile from 0.9m to 1.58m, pressure on the structure has been reduced and maintenance demands have been eased. This means the facilities can now be operational from April right through to the end of September. This not only extends access to this amazing community provision, but has created a more sustainable financial proposition.”

It's fantastic to see so many people enjoying this amazing space again. There has been a lido on this site since 1870 so it’s part of the local DNA. The original pool was affected by ground water levels, which, over the years, undermined the integrity of the structure and became increasingly expensive to maintain. Now that the pool has been re-engineered with the benefit of modern-day learnings and technologies, families will be able to enjoy the many physical mental and social benefits of this amazing facility for many generations to come.

This is exactly the kind of project we launched the Framework to support. The Northcroft lido has been a part of the community’s landscape for more than a century and its fantastic to secure its future for many more years to come. This was a technical project that required a high level of specialist expertise. Through the UK Leisure Framework we were able to engage expertise at all levels of the supply chain and feed this back through a single point of contact, Alliance Leisure. This helped to mitigate any risks that could threaten the budget or timescale of the project and ensured a smooth transition from concept through to launch.

Alliance Leisure completes redevelopment of Abbey Leisure Centre

The £3.5m redevelopment of Abbey Leisure Centre has now been completed on behalf of Durham County Council.

Opened to the public in July 2023, the project forms part of the council’s multi-million-pound Leisure Transformation Programme, which includes the refurbishment of existing sites such as Abbey in order to improve the county’s leisure stock. Alliance Leisure is delivering a number of projects for the programme, which will introduce a range of new activities and services to help improve health and wellbeing outcomes and sustain the council’s provision into the future.

Our brief was to review Durham County Council’s leisure estate and develop solutions for centres across the county to meet the needs of each local demographic. Our research showed that Abbey Leisure Centre was not being used to its full potential. We therefore proposed to transform the site into a family focussed centre offering facilities for toddlers to teens alongside an expanded health and fitness offer.

The centre’s four-court sports hall has been converted into family entertainment area with distinct zones catering for toddlers, juniors and teens. Attractions include soft play, a trampolining zone and an interactive Tag Active Challenge Arena including vertical obstacle towers that players must climb and descend in the quickest time possible. Incorporating Tag Active technology, players’ times are recorded and displayed on a leaderboard. The family entertainment area is supported by a new cafe, adding a social space to the centre, as well as party rooms.

On the first floor of the building, the gym has been relocated and doubled in size. The existing gym has been converted to a group exercise studio, while the provision of a second studio allows the centre to offer a full programme of group cycling sessions.

It’s rewarding to work on projects where we are able to give leisure facilities a new lease of life, by providing the latest attractions that bring the whole family together. We are proud to have played our part in delivering this project and look forward to seeing the centre thrive for years to come.

A new wellbeing suite has been created in one of the centre’s two squash courts. Offering specialist power assisted equipment from Innerva, the suite will provide a unique exercise and rehabilitation solution ideal for older adults, people suffering from long term health conditions, and those recovering from injury or returning to exercise. It is hoped the new suite will help people to become more active, improve their overall health and even act as a stepping stone into wider leisure facilities. The changing areas and sauna have also been refurbished as part of the project.

The project was delivered via the UK Leisure Framework, which is managed by Denbighshire Leisure LTD (DLL), with ISG as principal build contractor, Axiom as project manager and GT3 as architect for the scheme.

Alliance Leisure is currently on site on the redevelopment of Peterlee Leisure Centre.

Alliance Leisure Leads Development Project To Reintroduce Swim Facilities in Merthyr Tydfil

Thanks to a £6 million investment, secured by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, works are underway to reintroduce swimming facilities to the residents of Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, after structural damaged closed the pool in 2019.

Works are being carried out by Alliance Leisure through the UK Leisure Framework, which is managed by Denbighshire Leisure, and are expected to reopen to the public in the autumn of 2023.

Once complete, recommissioned facilities will provide residents with a 25m, six-lane main pool, a dedicated teaching pool offering a full swimming education programme plus a new splash pool designed to inspire water confidence and deliver engaging sensory experiences for toddlers. The changing facilities will also be updated and redesigned to improve the overall visitor experience.

Commissioning and conducting works through Alliance Leisure and the UK Leisure Framework has been a good decision. Using the UK Leisure Framework ensures we have access to the best expertise and price at all levels of the supply chain and having Alliance leisure act as a single point of contact has made communications and delivery super simple. So far, all works are on time and on budget.

Works began in November 2022 and in addition to re-commissioning the pools, the council is investing in decarbonisation measures which include replacing gas fuelled boilers with more efficient air source heat pumps. This is predicted to cut cardon emissions by 61 per cent, creating a more sustainable future for the centre.

The leisure centre will remain open while works take place so people can continue to benefit from other facilities at the centre, including the sports hall, fitness suite and exercise studios.

These works will not only give the people of Merthyr Tydfil access to a local pool for the first time in four years, but will also help the council to meet its carbon reduction ambitions to benefit the community both now and in the future. Learning to swim is a vital life skill which improves peoples mental health and wellbeing. Our residents have been without this swimming facility for too long. We are very pleased to be able to address these issues to bring these important community assets back into public use.

Works commence at Warsop Health Hub

Works have now commenced on the development of the new Warsop Health Hub.

Investment from Sport England, the DLUHC and the Government’s Towns Fund have made this project possible, and it is one of six projects funded from the £12.3m awarded to Mansfield District Council in 2021 from the Towns Fund allocation. The project is due to be completed in June 2024, and was procured through the UK Leisure Framework (managed by Denbighshire Leisure).

This development will see the installation of a new swimming pool, splash play area, changing village, multi-purpose hall, cafe viewing and IT area and community space. A short distance from the main site will also see the development of a new multi-use games area which is due to open early 2024.

Back in 2019, Sport England jointly funded the Living Well in Warsop Study alongside the Council, with reviewed the area’s leisure and community provisions. The study produced a list of suggestions and ideas that would lead to the right mix of activities, services and facilities to meet the needs of the community.

Sport England’s Uniting the Movement strategy aims to provide opportunities for all people to access sport and physical activity, regardless of their backgrounds, bank balance or postcodes and we know that having accessible and available facilities is essential in achieving this.
We are pleased to see work starting on the Warsop Health Hub, which is one of the first facilities to use our new Leisure Local concept. The opportunities to take part in sport and physical activity that will be made possible by this development are exciting to see and will benefit the local community for years to come, helping people lead healthy and happy lives.

Ceredigion Council Projects Achieve Completion

Three separate projects for Ceredigion Council have now all reached completion. All of these projects were completed in partnership with Surfacing Standards Limited and South Wales Sports Grounds, and were procured through the UK Leisure Framework (managed by Denbighshire Leisure).

The projects focused on updating the existing facilities across the three sites, bringing them up to a new high standard and providing first-class venues for the local community.

At Synod Inn, an investment of £138k resulted in the upgrade of 5-a-side and hockey pitches, which were significantly worn after over ten years of use. The pitches were replaced with new 3G pitches, providing greatly improved surface quality and durability against not just wear-and-tear, but also the weather.

The weather provided challenges at the beginning of this project, which commenced in January of this year. The team had to work through snow, high winds, mist and fog, as well as high winds in order to get the project underway. Despite this, the project was delivered ahead of schedule and to the highest standards.

The next development took place at Cardigan Leisure Centre, following a £419k investment to improve the existing pitches. Similarly to the pitches at Synod Inn, the pitches had reached the end of their lifespan, which lead to them no longer being suitable for use in bad weather. As well as updating the pitch surface, the pitch lighting was also replaced with more efficient heads.

These improvements have already demonstrated their value, due to the new pitch at Cardigan Leisure Centre being the only pitch remaining open during a day of significant pitch flooding across the county.

A further £305k investment was made to improve the pitch facilities at Lampater Leisure Centre. The project so far saw the installation of a new 2G hockey pitch, as well as replacing the existing halogen floodlights with new LED spotlights.

The upgrade of our Artificial Turf Pitches was the first time the authority used the UK Leisure Framework, and the knowledge and expertise that Alliance Leisure provided was invaluable. Having a nominated point of contact in Will Gardner meant that any queries were dealt with promptly and there were no surprises during the project delivery. The opportunity to access Alliance Leisure’s experience on their extensive project portfolio has also proved invaluable as we consider ways to improve our facility provision in the county, and we’ll certainly be looking to use the UK Leisure Framework again when the opportunity arises.

New Immersive Spin Studio launches at Grangemouth Sports Complex

After the introduction of Scotland’s first Immersive spin studio at the Mariner Centre in January 2020, we are delighted to announce the opening of a second studio at Grangemouth Sports Complex.

Following practical completion of this project (procured through the UK Leisure Framework which is managed by Denbighshire Leisure), the new cycle studio has now opened its doors to the public. The space will utilise the latest virtual reality technology and programming to take riders of all abilities on a full immersive sensory adventure that will elevate the indoor cycling experience to a whole new level.

The new studio will be larger than the studio at the Mariner Centre, and contains double the number of bikes to accommodate more riders. The bikes will be the latest iteration of the world renowned M3i Keiser bikes offering participants access to one of the most technologically advanced static bikes on the market. In this cinema-scale experience, the 3.1m tall screen will showcase digitally created worlds, which customers can cycle through, taking their 40-minute multi-peak cycling workout to a different level and burning some serious calories!

In addition to instructor-led classes, virtual classes are also being launched. This gives the client the ability to offer safe, effective and highly motivating classes throughout the day – even during times that are traditionally quiet, such as the afternoons. Individuals will simply hop on a bike and be taken through a full workout by a digital coach viewed on a large screen. Click here for more information about Les Mill immersive fitness.

Alliance Leisure successfully delivered our new immersive cycle studio to the highest possible standard and the project was completed on time and within budget.

In approaching this major investment at Grangemouth Sports Complex, we once again used the UK Leisure Framework. The UK Leisure Framework has a proven track record in designing and creating innovative builds across the UK, which we experienced first-hand in the successful delivery of our first immersive cycle studio at the Mariner Leisure Centre in 2020.

We are grateful to have chosen to work with Alliance Leisure on this building project and would welcome the opportunity to work with them again in future.

Work begins on the new Football Hub at Derby Racecourse

A ground breaking ceremony has marked the official start of the £11.9m Football Hub project on Derby Racecourse.

A ground breaking ceremony has marked the official start of the £11.9m Football Hub project on Derby Racecourse. Developers Alliance Leisure were joined by representatives from Derby City Council, the Football Foundation, main contractors Universal Group and other key stakeholders at a ground-breaking ceremony to mark the start of the Football Hub development on Derby Racecourse.

The Football Hub will regenerate the Racecourse, providing a state-of-the-art community building and three new full-size 3G football turf pitches (FTPs) on the site, as well as the refurbishment of the existing FTP. The new changing pavilion will include a community café and meeting space. In addition to the enhanced pitch provision, the Hub development will include increased parking spaces and improved entry and exit to the site.

The project has received joint funding from Derby City Council and the Premier League, The FA and Government’s Football Foundation. The goal is for the Football Hub to provide high-quality, sustainable facilities allowing all-year-round pitch use, ensuring a long-term future for grassroots football. Construction work will start in April 2023, and is due to finish in early 2024. Following completion, the facilities will be managed on behalf of Derby City Council by the National Football Trust and operated by Leisure United.
