The Grade II listed building, which opened in 1989, was listed in 2023 becoming one of the youngest listed buildings in the country. Funded by the City of Doncaster Council, the project aim was to modernise the pool complex whilst preserving the Dome’s character.
The Dome’s Lagoons area closed in November 2024. Completed in two phases over approximately 18 months, the initial phase of the refurbishment focussed primarily on essential maintenance works and upgrades to enhance the overall functionality and efficiency of the centre. This included removing and replacing ageing M&E systems, including pool filtration and ventilation, stripping out the existing flumes, water play equipment and changing area, and refitting the plant room. Renovation of the pool hall roof, glazing and flume tower was also undertaken.
The second phase of the project included the introduction of new water features to enhance the visitor experience. The changing village and toilets were also refitted and refurbished as part of the works.
Two new racer slides and a new indoor splash play area with a variety of interactive water features form part of the extensive programme of upgrades.
Major works have also been undertaken to replace the glazing, redesign the main entrance area and install new heating and ventilation systems responsible for heating and maintaining water and air quality within the swimming pool environment.
The redevelopment modernises one of the Dome’s most popular attractions, enhancing the visitor experience while securing the long-term future of the facility for the local community.
