Cossington Street Sports Centre
Completed in September 2020 and delivered on time and on budget despite taking place during a global pandemic, Cossington Street Sports Centre in Leicester is a true testament to the power of innovation.
Cossington Street Sports Centre was previously dominated by a traditional 3-court sports hall, resulting in its gym offering only occupying 50m2 across two rooms. Recognising the business requirements for Leicester City Council, the Alliance Leisure team reimagined the space, creating an innovative product that best suits the needs of the community.
Sticking within the budget of £820,000, Alliance Leisure assisted by Saunders Boston Architects and project contractors Etec, successfully transformed the sports hall into a versatile fitness space measuring 420m2, incorporating 50 training stations which can be adapted to suit a range of fitness activities.
The area accommodates both a fully equipped gym and free weight section and a studio featuring a specialist sprung floor and an independent lighting and audio system. A separate ‘Programmable Gym’ space, opening up to the main gym with sliding doors, provides a further flexible space for GP Referral or other more private sessions.
The centre’s changing spaces received a much-needed upgrade, being reconfigured in order to maximise space as well as being modernised.
Finally, the centre’s entrance was relocated. This in turn created a much more welcoming space for visitors – a key aspect of providing a positive first impression of a centre.
This innovative and highly successful development forms part of a £2.3m 3-site package for Leicester City Council, which was procured through the UK Leisure Framework, which is managed by Denbighshire Leisure.
