Alliance Leisure raise over £6,000 for Cancer Research UK

This month, Alliance Leisure joined forces with over 600 people from public sector organisations and suppliers to conquer the 2024 Public Sector Challenge, hiking an epic 24-mile (38.6km) route across the legendary Three Yorkshire Peaks: Pen-y-Ghent (694m), Whernside (736m), and Ingleborough (723m).

The intrepid team began the challenge at Horton in Ribblesdale at 6am and competed it 12 hours later, having logged over 60,000 steps. Alliance Leisure were also joined by colleagues from CGP MEP and Hensall, all in the name of raising funds for Cancer Research UK.

John Leaver, Marketing and Frameworks Director, Alliance Leisure, says: “Completing this challenge took serious dedication from the entire team. In the months leading up to the event we prepared ourselves mentally and physically and also ran a virtual movement challenge for those not able to attend in person. The event itself was much more demanding than anticipated but I’m pleased to say we all crossed the line.”

The Public Sector Challenge, spearheaded by Jonathan Stephenson, Chief Executive of Brentwood BC and Rochford DC, has grown significantly since its inception. In 2022, Stephenson and 30 council employees completed the Three Peaks Yorkshire Challenge, raising over £12,000 for local charities. By 2024, the event had swelled to 650 participants, who together have raised more than £200,000 for Cancer Research UK.

That was the toughest thing I have ever done in my entire life. My legs, my feet, my shoulders, everything hurts. The mountains were so hard and then the final walk back was around 4 miles and went on and on. Thank you to everyone who has donated though as it definitely kept us all going.
