Chard Leisure Centre

This new, accessible, and extensive leisure facility was opened on November the 8th 2021 by South Somerset District Council as part of the wider Chard Regeneration Project.

Work began in December 2019, and despite the challenge of the Covid-19 pandemic the impressive building has been completed, providing a vast, high-spec facility for both the local community and visitors.

The leisure centre occupies circa 2,000 square metres, and incorporates a 25 metre swimming pool and separate training pool with wet facilities served by a dedicated, spacious changing village. It also boasts an indoor adventure play area, a gym, a fitness studio, a group cycling studio, and a lounge and café. The site has excellent accessibility features, including a Changing Places facility, ensuring that everyone can participate in the new centre’s activities. It will be managed by Freedom Leisure.

The ambitious project was procured and delivered via the UK Leisure Framework – managed by Denbighshire Leisure Ltd. It was delivered by Alliance Leisure and supported by building contractor, Speller Metcalfe. Julia Goddard, Senior Development Manager at Alliance Leisure, says:

“Thanks to the dedication of our trusted supply chain we have tackled any pandemic induced challenges head on and succeeded in delivering this project on time and under budget.
The new centre is truly stunning and is perfectly placed to become the heartbeat of the community, offering the local population a safe, inspiring place to relax, meet friends and get active.”

We are absolutely delighted to be able to hand over the keys to Chard Leisure Centre, which we know will provide both fantastic facilities and employment opportunities for local residents and visitors to the area.

Together the project team has worked tirelessly throughout the build - even with the challenge of a global pandemic - and we are extremely proud to see it open to the public.

It is fantastic to see the derelict Boden Mill site transformed into a thriving activity hub right in the heart of the community. In addition to serving those who live and work in Chard, the facility is expected to attract footfall from neighbouring towns and villages, helping to drive the local economy.

Freedom Leisure were delighted to work in partnership with Alliance Leisure during the build and opening of the new Chard Leisure Centre in South Somerset. The Alliance Leisure team were professional and maintained excellent communication throughout the project, involving us as the new operator in all key decisions in the final design process. The project was delivered ahead of schedule which has allowed the sites operational team to exceed its initial targets for both fitness memberships and swimming lessons. The diverse mix of facilities in the venue has given Freedom Leisure the opportunity to fully engage with the whole community and provide new opportunities in the town which were, in some instances, over a 30 minute drive away previously. It is wonderful to see the leisure centre being fully utilised by the community and to allow a safe place for improvements to both physical and mental wellbeing for adults and children.
