Carlton Active Programme Progresses into Early Preparation Phase
Carlton Active Programe Progresses
The Richard Herrod Centre in Carlton has been officially handed over from Gedling Borough Council to us, alongside appointed construction team Universal Civils and Build, marking a significant milestone in the progression of the Carlton Active programme.
Following the building’s closure last month, the site will now move into an early preparation phase. This will include setting up the site, installing hoarding, carrying out surveys and investigations, making the building safe and secure and removing internal fittings in preparation for potential future redevelopment.
The project is currently in detailed design, with a planning application expected later this year.
Carlton Active is being designed to create more than just a place to exercise. The vision is to create a vibrant community destination where people can move, meet, socialise and improve their wellbeing in a welcoming and inclusive environment. The proposals for the new Carlton Active will include modern swimming facilities, fitness and wellbeing spaces, family-focused activity areas and flexible community environments, all brought together within a contemporary and sustainable new building.
Will Gardner, Assistant Regional Director at Alliance Leisure said:
We’re thrilled to be working alongside Gedling Borough Council to progress the Carlton Active programme. Through the UK Leisure Framework, we’re bringing together an experienced team to help shape proposals for a modern leisure facility that will meet the needs of the local community now and into the future. As work begins on site preparation and the project moves through the detailed design stage, we look forward to continuing our partnership with the council.
Subject to planning approval and a future decision by Cabinet, the project could progress to construction from 2027.
Carlton Active forms part of the Council’s wider Leisure Transformation programme, which aims to create inclusive, accessible and financially sustainable facilities that meet the needs of residents now and into the future.
Leader of Gedling Borough Councillor, John Clarke MBE, said:
The handover of Richard Herrod Centre to our contractors is an important step forward in progressing Carlton Active. While we know the existing centre holds many memories for residents, it no longer meets modern standards. This project represents a major investment in the future of leisure in Carlton, and we’re excited to move ahead with developing proposals for a new, high-quality facility that will benefit the whole community.
Our Insight and Engagement team have been supporting the council by providing a dedicated microsite to keep the community updated with the plans.
We look forward to sharing further project updates as they arise.
